Bus tycoon slips in 'rich list'
![]() Shares in Stagecoach have fallen in the past year
Stagecoach boss, Brian Souter, has lost his place as Scotland's richest man.
The top spot goes to Tom Hunter, the entrepreneur who sold the Sports Division chain. The Sunday Times Rich List values Mr Souter and his sister Ann Gloag jointly at 565m, a fall of 285m.
Mr Souter has been in the headlines recently as the financial cornerstone of the Keep the Clause campaign, which is campaigning against the repeal of Section 28, the law which bans the promotion of homosexuality in schools. The high-profile campaign has brought Mr Souter into the limelight, but he has attracted as much criticism as he has support for his stance. Scotland's richest woman Equal rights activists called for a boycott of all Stagecoach buses as his campaign gathered momentum, but he remains adamant he has the backing of the majority of Scottish parents. Shares in Stagecoach have not performed well as the market has been focusing more on the Internet. Valued separately, Anne Gloag keeps her place as Scotland's richest woman. But her brother is overtaken by Tom Farmer, whose fortune the list estimates at 400m. New ventures Since selling his sportswear chain to JJB, he has gone on to pursue a range of new ventures, most notably a 30% stake in an Internet retailer, Toyzone, which is valued at around 250m and may be floated soon. Sir Sean Connery's 60m only gets him to 35th on the list. Alan Wiseman and his family's stake in their milk production business along with other assets makes them worth 69m, and takes them to number 30 on the list. |
