Labour has held onto the Rochdale seat and gained four extra councillors despite Gordon Brown labelling a pensioner in the town "bigoted".

The Lib Dems have also lost control Rochdale Council.

Gordon Brown had to apologise to Gillian Duffy, 65, after being recorded calling her a "bigoted woman".

The parliamentary seat, which was previously only classed as Labour because of boundary changes, swung just 0.8% from the Lib Dems.

The local council is now classed as being under no overall control, with 26 Liberal Democrats councillors, 22 Labour, 11 Conservatives and one Independent.
