Labour has held onto the Rochdale seat and gained four extra councillors despite Gordon Brown labelling a pensioner in the town "bigoted". The party snatched the parliamentary seat from the Liberal Democrats - Simon Danzuk polling 809 more votes than his main rival, Paul Rowen. The Lib Dems have also lost control Rochdale Council. Gordon Brown had to apologise to Gillian Duffy, 65, after being recorded calling her a "bigoted woman". The parliamentary seat, which was previously only classed as Labour because of boundary changes, swung just 0.8% from the Lib Dems. The local council is now classed as being under no overall control, with 26 Liberal Democrats councillors, 22 Labour, 11 Conservatives and one Independent.
