Corn Exchange arts plan rejected
Architects Ushida Findlay's designs for the Corn Exchange
The £4.2m conversion would have been over two floors
The future of Bury St Edmunds' historic Corn Exchange remains uncertain after plans for a £4.2m visual arts centre were rejected.

The building is due to become redundant in three years when a new arts venue for opens in the Cattle Market.

Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery Trust proposed a radical plan to convert the old exchange.

But St Edmundsbury Borough councillors, who backed a feasibility study, claimed the conversion would be too expensive.

The decision to reject the plan was taken at a meeting of the St Edmundsbury's cabinet committee on Thursday.

The plans for the Corn Exchange were drawn up by award-winning international architects Ushida Findlay.

The design featured a double layered glass roof with two floors created in the building.
