Road agency helps wandering swans
Swan
Traffic officers are in direct contact with the swan sanctuary
Road patrols have received training on how to rescue swans that regularly end up stranded on part of the M25.

The Highways Agency said groups of the birds were disrupting traffic at junction 13 where the motorway crosses the River Thames in north Surrey.

The agency's traffic officers who patrol the M25, M3 and M23 were taught how to deal with them at the Swan Sanctuary in Walton-on-Thames.

They were trained in how to save the swans quickly and humanely.

Staff at the sanctuary demonstrated how the birds can be caught without causing injury or distress to them.

The traffic officers now carry specialist equipment in their vehicles.

The Highways Agency said swans get onto the motorway at least two or three times a week.

Spokesman John Henderson said: "I feel confident our officers will be more than able to deal with any swan that finds its way onto our network."
