Robbie Williams is well known in the West Sussex town of Kirdford

The under-16s Kirdford Cougars team were preparing for their regular kickaround in Kirdford, West Sussex, on Saturday when he turned up unannounced.

The Port Vale fan, who is thought to be worth more than £30m, even paid the 50p signing on fee.

The multi-million pound star has been renting a mansion in nearby Whithurst Park while recording his new album.

Joyce Morgan, 57, of Townfield Road, Kirdford, told how the coach had said to Williams: "Hang on, the boys pay 50p", at which point he tossed him the money.

"The children were really excited," she said.

"He's been around the area a lot recently and is always very friendly."

She said Williams played football for about an hour-and-a-half.

The singer is well known in the town, and often goes to the nearby Foresters Arms pub for a drink.

Landlady Marlene Oliver said: "He's very chatty and doesn't mind signing autographs.

"He's become just like one of the locals."
