Vandals blamed for bus price rise

Fares are rising by 4.5% overall, although some have fallen
Vandalism and rising fuel costs have been blamed for price rises of up to £1 for a weekly ticket on buses in Oxford.

The Oxford Bus Company says insurance costs have leapt by 39% because of increased vandalism. The company also blames a rise in the price of fuel.

Fares are to go up by an average of 4.5%, although some fares have gone down.

A company spokesperson said: "We spend over £2m a year on fuel so even a small increase has a huge impact."

The spokesperson added: "In some parts of the country bus operators imposed a special fuel surcharge but we wanted to avoid that."

The company runs more than 30 routes in Oxford, Kidlington, Didcot and Abingdon, as well as the Oxford Express service to central London.

The new fares, which came into effect on Sunday, come after a move to a new depot on Watlington Road, although managers say this has made running costs lower.
