London Eye tops England icon poll
London Eye
The Eye has proved to be a huge hit with tourists
The London Eye is the icon of modern England, according to a new survey.

Almost six out of 10 people said the 135-metre structure most summed up 21st Century England, with Big Ben being voted the most famous landmark.

The results of the GfK NOP survey are published for the launch of ICONS - A Portrait of England.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport commissioned the project to prompt a debate about what icons most represent England.

Winning the Ashes came out top of sporting iconic events at 54%, just ahead of the FA Cup (52%).

Asked to choose an icon that sums up traditional England, the monarchy was the most popular choice, with nearly half the vote (48%), beating roast beef (42%).

Young people (15 to 24-years-olds) had a different point of view, though - they put the plays of Shakespeare top at 47%, while rating Robin Hood and roast beef (both 43%) higher than the monarchy (38%).

Asked what food or drinks they would miss most if they went abroad, 48% of people chose a cup of tea, 44% said roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, and 43% fish and chips.

The over 65s, though, put roast beef at the top of their menu and 15 to 24 year olds were keenest on fish and chips.
