Bus ticket inspectors have caught, on average, one fare dodger each per
day since Ken Livingstone became Mayor, new figures show.
The London Assembly revealed 246,000 passengers were caught without a ticket between April 2000 and September 2004.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for penalty fines to be increased "in order to deter fare dodgers".
The figures also revealed the number of ticket inspectors ranged from 135 to 200 in the same period.
The figures were disclosed at Mayor's Question Time on 20 October.
"It is vital that the Mayor and Transport for London urgently target and catch persistent fare dodgers so that the message gets hammered home that this is a criminal offence," said Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport spokesperson Lynn Featherstone.
