Organisers of the Special Olympics in Leicester have appealed to the county council to help plug a funding shortfall.

The city is due to host the event in July, after last staging it in 1989.

However, organisers face a budget deficit of £1m in the £2.9m cost of putting on the event.

The county council said it will consult with Leicester City Council before deciding on the amount it will consider contributing.

Leicestershire County Council's cabinet will then discuss the issue at a meeting on 29 June.

The games are held every two years and involve 2,500 athletes with learning disabilities who compete in more than 21 different sports over seven days.

The Special Olympics GB 2009 starts on 25 July and runs until 31 July with events taking place at 20 venues across Leicestershire and Rutland.
