Fury greets Post Office closure

The Post Office in Tunbridge Wells Morrisons is to close
Businesses in a Kent town are furious at the closure of a sub-post office, which they say will hit residents and retailers equally hard.

The sub-post office inside Morrisons supermarket in Vale Road, Tunbridge Wells is due to close on 19 June.

"It will cut out half the community, from The Pantiles as far as the Town Hall," said Graham Bell, secretary of the Association of Pantiles Traders.

The Post Office said Morrisons no longer wanted to be a sub-postmaster.

Closing branches

"We share the disappointment of our loyal customers," it said in a statement.

"We have not been able to extend the provision of post office services at the current location.

"It is our aim to secure a new post office in the area as soon as possible."

But Mr Bell said he was not hopeful there would be a replacement.

"It does look as though it is their mandate to close post offices and not to open new ones," he said.

Morrisons is closing post office branches in many of the stores it took over from Safeway.

It said it gave the Post Office 12 months to find a new location.

"It was hoped that Post Office Ltd would transfer to another company, however, another operator has not been found," added Morrisons.
