Gusty winds batter south coast
Flooding
Strong southeasterly winds battered the south coast last night
A number of homes had to be evacuated in Dorset after high tides and winds battered the south coast overnight.

The worst hit area appears to have been Swanage, where the sea lashed over the defences during high tide flooding into Lower High Street.

Firefighters moved people out of some basement flats as a precautionary measure, a coastguard spokesman said.

The bad weather also caused problems in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

Chiswell - behind the county's Chesil beach - Preston and Weymouth, where some roads were flooded overnight, will be closely watched by the Environment Agency on Thursday.

Further heavy rain and gusty winds are forecast for the region.
