Forest Moor: Developers say the turbines created mixed reactions
|
Work has started on Devon's first windfarm, at Forest Moor near Bradworthy in the north of the county.
Three turbines, which are due to start delivering power in February next year, are 75m tall (246ft) to the top of their blades.
Energie Kontor, the firm behind the £3.6m scheme, won a planning appeal to build the turbines after Torridge council rejected its application.
The turbines will produce enough power for a maximum of 2,000 homes.
There are a number of other proposals for windfarms in north Devon.
Plans for three turbines at Higher Darracott near Torrington were won on appeal and plans for 22 turbines at Fullabrook Down near Ilfracombe have recently been submitted.
German firm Energie Kontor, which is behind the Forest Moor scheme, says that the turbines are of the latest design and noise will be below recommended levels.
Mick McLoughlin of Energie Kontor's UK arm, said: "There is no designated protected landscape anywhere near our site.
"It is a matter of aesthetics. Some see them as symbols of clean power, an icon of hope, but there are others that want the countryside preserved in aspic."
The first phase of the building work will be to create access to the site, with the turbines due to arrive on site in early October.
The firm will then build electricity sub-stations and the turbines will be erected in the New Year.
