Faliraki is a popular holiday destination for young Britons

British consular officials in Greece are working with local police after the teenager died after a tourist brawl.

Police in the resort said the fight was at a bar called Q at Faliraki on the island of Rhodes at 0100 BST on Tuesday.

They confirmed that the victim, reported to be from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and a temporary resident of Faliraki, was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle severing his jugular vein.

The Foreign Office press office said 10 British Nationals will appear in court on Wednesday.

They are believed to include five from Liverpool and two from Northern Ireland.

Seven of them, aged between 18 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of murder during the day on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night another three were arrested.

The victim's body was taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that one British national has died in an incident."

The man's next of kin had not yet been informed.

"We understand that a group of Britons were involved in a fracas in the early hours of this morning.

"Consular staff are in close contact with the police."

Not enough police

The island draws tens of thousands of young travellers from Britain every summer.

Faliraki's mayor, Yiannis Iatridis, said there was still not enough security at the resort despite a recent decision to boost police patrols.

"This is our biggest problem, there are not enough police around," he said.

"All these young men come and they think they can do anything they like."

The public prosecutor of Rhodes has summoned the directors of the four biggest travel agencies for a meeting on Wednesday to discuss "problems created by the tourists' attitude," a judiciary source on the island said.

There have been a number of tragic accidents and sexual assaults in the resort in recent months.

Last week a tourist from Swansea was killed when he was run over by a refuse lorry.

Matthew Benney, 29, is thought to have gone under the truck as part of a bet with friends, witnesses told police in Rhodes.

In July, a 17-year-old girl said she was lured into a taxi and raped on a beach after being picked up on the main strip in the town.

A 37-year-old man faces trial next year.

The number of reported rapes on the island has doubled in recent years - from 17 in 1998 to 34 in 2002.

In June 2002, the Foreign Office called on holidaymakers to respect law and order after 11 British tourists were arrested in the resort in a single week.
