New horizons for air show

Visitors flock to see the historic planes on show

The future of Sunderland Air Show has been assured for the next five years after a deal with Teesside Airport.

p> The Air Show is the biggest annual event in the North-East - and the biggest free event of its kind in the whole of Europe.

It had been run under the control of Newcastle Airport, but now a new deal means Teesside will take over the running.

For the past 14 years, Newcastle Airport has directed the aircraft in and out of the airspace over the Sunderland seafront - and also provided them with a base to land and take off.

The new agreement means Teesside will take over the task for at least the next five years.

A spokesman for Teesside said they were delighted to play a part in such a prestigious event.

This 2003 show will be held on 26 and 27 July, and once again about a million people in total will turn out to watch.
