Search for lost soldier's kin
Pte Crompton will be buried near to where he died
Historians are searching for relatives of a soldier who died during World War I but was never properly buried.
Private William Crompton of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire was 24 when he died in July 1916 during the battle of the Somme. None of his close relatives have been located, and it is hoped some can be found before his full military burial in September in France. David Bartlett, of Bartlett Battlefield Journeys, said that William had four brothers and was survived by his wife and two sons and a daughter.
Pte Crompton was a member of the First Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment, which lost 243 men in less than 24 hours in the battle. The remains of many soldiers are still being found on battlefields in France, but it is unusual to identify them, Mr Bartlett said. He said the remains of more than 150 soldiers have been found in the past year in the area of Ypres alone - but none have been identified. The body of Pte Crompton was identified in 1999 by his identify disc and regimental shoulder title. Mr Bartlett is hoping one of Pte Crompton's sons, who would be in their 90s now, is still alive. "We hope that someone from the family or someone who knows the family will contact us," he said.
