Factors affecting tsunami's impact

The tsunami which struck on Wednesday evoked memories of the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, but there were some crucial differences between them.

While the waves were much smaller, they hit islands which lie much lower in the water - and their proximity to the earthquake epicentre affected the ability to warn people of the expected impact.
