This February, Roberto Carcelen became the first ever athlete from Peru to compete in the Winter Olympics. His unlikely journey started in Seattle and took him from roller skiing on the streets of the Pacific Northwest to qualifying races in the snow of New Zealand.

The neophyte and his wife filled out all the necessary paperwork and paid for everything out of pocket.

The BBC caught up with Roberto shortly after his race, when he celebrated with family members and a long-awaited drink.
