Lennon's Abbey Road suit sold off

Lennon's suit prompted much speculation
The white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album sold for $118,000 (£66,385) at an auction in Las Vegas.

An Austin Princess hearse driven by the late star in the documentary Imagine reached a bid of $150,000 (£84,388).

The sale also included a 1961 appointment book of Marilyn Monroe, which sold for $16,000 (£9,000).

Lennon wore his white suit on the album cover where the Fab Four are on a pedestrian crossing for the 1969 album.

Although all sorts of theories were raised as to the significance of the outfits worn by the band on the photoshoot it turned out the four just posed in what they had been wearing on the day.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Lennon items will go to campaign group Amnesty International.

A headdress worn by actress Elizabeth Taylor in the movie Cleopatra went for $13,000 (£7,594).

The floral decoration was put up for sale by Taylor's friend Debbie Reynolds, who starred in Singin' in the Rain.

Lennon's car was bought by Japanese entertainer Princess Tenko, who has a Vegas magic show.

Used in a 1973 film, the 1953 hearse has the personal license plate "EMAJN".
