Early closure for £4m Raj musical
The Far Pavilions
The Far Pavilions sees an army officer fall for an Indian princess
West End musical The Far Pavilions is closing early after audiences fell and its leading lady Gayatri Iyer had to return to India.

Based on a novel by Mary Margaret Kaye, the £4m musical's five-month run at Shaftesbury Theatre will end on 17 September, not January 2006 as planned.

Audiences fell following July's London bombings, producers said, and its Indian star's work permit has expired.

They aimed to revive the musical for a national tour but no dates were given.

Illicit affair

The Far Pavilions spans 25 years between the Sepoy uprisings of the late 1850s and the Afghan war, and follows an illicit affair between a British Raj officer and an Indian princess.

To recreate the book's contrast between the two cultures, the new musical had two composers - Philip Henderson, who is British, and Kuljit Bhamra, who is Indian.

"Audiences were absolutely fine," the show's spokeswoman said, "we just took a knock after the bombings."

She added: "It has not been a particularly short run - we have still performed around 200 shows."
