Who should sing for England?
England's football chiefs have denied reports Swedish band The Cardigans are to record the country's official World Cup song.
The rockers were approached to do the song because the England manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson, is also Swedish, reported the Sun. The FA says no decision has been made about who should record this year's anthem. Football songs were once a laughing stock - they usually used to be sung by the players. But after New Order's World In Motion in 1990, everything changed. The Spice Girls put their name to 1998's track, and Three Lions and Vindaloo became unofficial anthems for European tournaments in 1996 and 2000. But who can do the job for England this year? Can foreign talent like the Cardigans lift the side - or should home-grown performers take on the job?
Three Lions will be sung forever at England games. It captures the whole essence of a good rousing theme that England supporters can, and do, and will again, sing.
I think the oportunity should go the Gorillaz, a make believe band for a team with a make believe chance.
Who gives a monkey's? You have just qualified by the skin of your teeth... Might as well just take a song that's already out.. Moby "why does my heart feel so bad", Ha ha!!
Oasis could come up with something spectacular.
Oasis should do this year's World Cup song. Their catchy singalong rock tune style would suit any football occasion .... and they're football fans themselves, and so would probably do it.
Simon, England
How about Fatboy Slim? I'm sure he could kick us into life.
Let Mariah have a go, she could do with the money.
Personally, I miss the really awful songs of the 70s featuring the players - bring on the amateurs! Football has become so commerical and glossy which is ultimately very boring.
Phil, England
Clearly Chas and Dave should be the country's first choice for any kind of musical anthem. The 'cockney geezers' seem to have been overlooked once again! An injustice and a disgrace!
Who cares? Football's coming home early again this year anyway. But if it has to be anyone, why not Bob the Builder? He can at least try and fix things!
It doesn't matter who sings or what they sing. 'Three Lions' has become the football equivalent of the National Anthem, and I don't see it being usurped for a long time.
I'd go for Bob the Builder, an honest working class fellow that embodies what football is really about. That being it is a game played by the people for the people.
Jerome, France
Who cares who sings it, just make sure it's catchy, raises spirits and is well liked.
It doesn't matter who sings the song, it will probably be awful anyway.
There's only one England song that matters, Three Lions. It is truly an England Football Anthem.
Absolutely no way! Sweden may have better managers than England but we have the best musicians in the world!
David, England
Why do we need a song? Is it an effort to make the dull game of football more exciting?
Why not go with the public choice?
Three Lions 2002 (Three crowns - in honour of Sweden).
The England song has to sung by an English group, but please, no players singing, or especially rapping!
The Cardigans are a great band but this is about English football - and we have so many brilliant musicians of our own who have proved in the past that they can produce classic football anthems. Surely someone like Robbie Williams would be an ideal choice.
Leonard Spragg, UK
Why bother? The unofficial songs are always much better.
To misery-guts Vinny of Ireland - you may as well get an English band to sing *your* song, since your team is managed by and Englishman and is full of Englishmen who have a grandparent who may once have drunk a Guinness.
It would be an insult to the Queen Mother and Winston Churchill's memory if a Swede band were to represent us on the global football arena. Why not get Chaz 'n' Dave singing for England?
Picking up on Vinny's idea of using a song which has already been recorded, and with one eye on England's group, one of the following might be worth considering: "Pray", "Don't cry for me Argentina", "Should've known better", "Down down", "Help" and "I can't stand up for falling down (Emile Heskey remix)".
Dodgy songs? Dodgy team.
Richard, UK
I really think a rerelease of "The Final Countdown" by Europe would be good... "Kom igen Sverige!!!"
Seems like a good idea, provided it isn't "I'm losing my favourite game".
England Football song should be sung by a British band or singer, some-one who is into football i.e. Robbie Williams.
I think Kevin Keegan, he's got a great voice!
Mark, USA (ex-Scotland)
What about a country & western act? They're used to singing about tragedies. Go on Ireland!!!
I believe Michael Ball should sing for England. He has a wonderful and powerful voice.
Posh Spice should do it. A comedy football team deserves a comedy tune.
How about letting Darius from Pop Idol
sing it? It would be a gauranteed cheesy song and
therefore would get to number one!
Babatunde Folarin, UK
Let's not get xenophobic about this. Had the xenophobes held sway regarding the appointment of SGE I doubt we would have thrashed Germany last summer. Find the best song, then the best singers/band.
Jerusalem only making it to number 10 was almost certainly a direct consequence of the BBC boycotting it on Radio 1. Too jingoistic for the politically correct apologists in Broadcasting House?
Lightning Seeds with Skinner and Baddiel to make a welcome return with a new song.
I think the song should be "Cast Of Thousands" by the English band, the Boys. It's just as catchy as 3 Lions, and would be the perfect anthem for this summer.
Mickey West, UK
To Vinny in Ireland: It's hardly like the Irish football team set their group alight, was it? If qualifying in first place is the 'skin of our teeth', then going through the playoffs must be even worse.
I think that Robbie should belt out a footy anthem.
Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle
No question, Leonard Cohen.
If the Germans got to 'grin and bear it'(!) with Village People singing their footie anthem (was it Euro 2000?), then I think that there can be no complaints opting for a nice bunch of butch Swedes.
I think we should let Depeche Mode sing the song. Not only are they English, they are one of the the biggest bands in the world and the song will be of the highest quality.
Let's do away with England football songs. We won the world cup in 1966 without one. Ever since back home was released in 1970 we never regained it. They seem to be a bad omen, no matter how reasonable the song is.
Karen, UK
How about getting Chris Moyles from Radio 1 to do it. He could do a parody of three lions, everyone knows the tune, just change the words a tad.
The official song should be "Football Is Life (Come On England)" by the FC Allstars. Described by Ant'n'Dec as a "huge hit"
How about asking the Halle orchestra to record a special world cup version of the theme from Dr Who? In fact it should be the new national anthem!
How about getting Madonna to do it. She's English now, isn't she? Perhaps her Cockney husband could do a Chas and Dave style, knees up remix.
I've always though that Madness should record "One Step Beyond"!!!
Micheal Hunt, UK
I think a Pop Idol ensemble would go down well. People might actually buy the single after all!
Three Lions is a classic, and I think fans of England from all over the world have taken it as their offical anthem.
Although Three Lions is rightly a classic, we cannot have it rolled out a third time. If we do, it will just be boring and lack any sort of imagination (a bit like the England selection before Sven). For me, the England New Order track was the pinnacle of the football/pop crossover and with New Order's new-found commercialism and the handy knack of a killer tune, the time could be right for their return.
Alternatively and without wishing to pre-judge our national team's performance, perhaps Depeche Mode or Radiohead could come up with a dour little ditty to bring us all down a notch or two.
No doubt - There is only one suitable song for such an event. It is THE BOYS - Cast of Thousands. Okay?
Get Joe Strummer to do it.
Joe, UK
Oasis should do it.. The best band, and they LOVE football!
The greatest band should sing the song for the greatest football nation... Echo and the Bunnymen of course minus the bimbettes
Put the Spice Girls
together for the
official song. That
way we will only have
to listen to one rubbish
song instead of five
separate ones.
"Three Lions" were both great songs, they really got me into the spirit of things. But I feel that 6 years after the release of the first song, that it should be laid to rest. You can only rewrite a hit so many times! Get some one (Oasis, Robbie Williams) who will really mean what they sing about the country.
Good luck to whoever submits a song this year - but please, please, do not rewrite "Three Lions"!
OASIS...OASIS...OASIS
Definitly Oasis!
They're home grown and they're mad fer football.
Oasis should play. They have the best songs written by the best songwriter to come into the rock'n'roll spotlight. Oasis all the way.
Maybe we could see the release of a TV-Football theme too. What about the "They Think It's All Over" theme? That'd be a smash.
My line up is:
- "They Think It's All Over"
- "Glorious" by Andreas Johnson
- "D'ya Know What I Mean" by Oasis
- "Vindaloo" by Fat Les
Oasis is the band, they're so perfect for this case, they love football and are great pals, what else do you need?
Victoria Beckham
How about the song "Hooligan" by Embrace - it really symbolises the ethos of England fans.
Get the Cockney Rejects out of retirement and give them a go.
They did a great job with "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" when West Ham made it into the final back in the 80s.
Erin Flachsbart, USA
It's gotta be Oasis. Having heard a couple of their latest tracks they are undoubtedly back to their best. They have exactly what it takes to write a perfect terrace song!
I think "Lost in France" by Bonnie Tyler should be resurrected. The chorus to be sung by players who missed penalties along the way could list all the other World Cup Final venues England has lost in as well. Might be a bit longer than 3 Lions mind you if we have to get all the details in.
Regardless of the song's success I think Spinal Tap will remain bigger in Japan than England as a group.
It's bad enough having a Swedish manager but to have the offical song sung by a load of Swedes...
There's absolutely no doubt here - it should be Robbie Williams - and how about "We Are The Champions" - as an avid football fan and eccentric patriotic and still homesick ex Brit (now residing in the US) do I still have clout?
I would like Radiohead to do the England song. Everyone says they are depressing, and that's what I feel about England's performance in every World Cup.
Max Power, UK
Ant and Dec should definitely do this year's song, they're big football fans and have a nation full of fans. They would raise the spirits of the whole thing!
I think that someone good and British like S Club 7 should do it, or if not than the England team should do the song themselves!
Definitely a rousing chorus from Oasis to chant in the pubs across England would be ideal.
I think Ant & Dec should do the World Cup song! It's what they love and they are loved by the nation! GO ANT & DEC!
I would like to see a re-release of Three Lions, or something by Blur or Oasis.
Failing that, any ENGLISH artist / group should record the song.
I'm happy we've got a Swedish boss, but the Cardigans singing our OFFICIAL song - no way!
A re-recorded version of "Three Lions" would do the job, with vocals by Robbie Williams and Liam Gallagher - if those two can pull together for their country, anything's possible!
Matt, UK
Ant and Dec seem the obvious choice. Pop Idols!
Ant and Dec have been rumoured haven't they? I think they'd be an excellent choice! We can't have Frank and Dave again (sob) but Ant and Dec could pull off a good song just as well, I reckon! At least they're well known football fanatics!
Ant and Dec!!! They've done the pop stardom thing before, and everybody loves them! Who else could pull it off but those cheeky geordies?!
I think that the best song for the UK at the moment is "Bitter Sweet Symphony".
Hehehehe (sorry to be so crude - but I think that AGAIN they ain't gonna do it!)
Oasis, why not?? But it's really up to Oasis to take the challenge.
I agree with Phil, The Boys have in Cast of Thousands the greatest football song ever, especially from the fans perspective. With a real anthemic chorus it stuffs the drippy 3 Lions.
Ant and Dec, please! (well, why not?)
Ruben Echeverria, UK-Venezuela
How about Billy Bragg? He's both English and a good songwriter. And he has the right sort of voice. He's also done "patriotic" songs in the past like New England.
How about a song by a nice Canadian band? We're part of the Commonwealth and won't have a hope of getting to the World Cup for a couple of decades. Go ask the Barenaked Ladies!
I think Sven Sven Sven should be the anthem because without out him we would be sitting at home watching Finland and Germany in the World Cup.
The Who.
Football Is Life (Come on England) is catchy and patriotic. Check out Thumb Bandits on Channel Four to see the band FC Allstars (Feb 8).
Iain, Scotland
If Oasis do it, they could do 'Round Our Way' (from the b-side of 'Wonderwall') as it's a really cool and catchy song, is very English, and even some of the lyrics are about playing football with your mates.
Whoever sings it has got to have passion for the game and be able to bring out in the song, enough to make England's supporters all over the world sit up, listen and feel for a team that's geared up for a good fight in Japan/Korea.
Does the BBC just set up these pages for Scots and Irish with giant chips on their shoulders to insult English people? Why? I think Vangelis's beautiful arrangement of Jerusalem or the equally spine-tingling I Vow to Thee My Country should be used, rather than some cheap pop gimmick. Those are our true national anthems.
Jim Dallas, England
I agree Oasis should do it, they some up the football culture, plus they have a new album out around the same time as the world cup.
No way, not the Cardigans - definitely Oasis. This could be a chance for a big comeback for them! Not that they need it...
Given the probable inclusion of the Neville brothers in the England squad, how's about the Laurel and Hardy theme tune?
Ant and Dec
Iain of Scotland may well appreciate a remake of Back Home.
I have no problem with Swedes performing the song. It would however be better to get Abba to reform for it.
I think Oasis should sing for the World Cup in this way they will Rock the World and enjoy it.
I prefer Oasis not because I am a fan but they a the real rock band. Everybody, let's support Oasis to have the World Cup song.
Marianne Faithful.
Of course The Cardigans should sing!
SWEDEN RULES....
If you want to have a good tune and a band that is absolutely superb for the part, then go for Oasis - even if you don't like them they're still very English and very footballish. If you want to make us look like complete idiots, then I can suggest no better than Victoria Beckham.
Let Robbie Williams do it,
he's a football fan after all.
Ant and Dec should do it because they are quite simply gorgeous.
Oasis? Talk about giving the wrong message. A bunch of has-beens singing about a bunch of has-beens! Definitely NOT. I think football songs are stupid anyway, but if there must be one my vote would be for "The Beautiful South" singing a very traditional "Land of Hope and Glory". I bet the Scots are happy they don't have this dilemma, HA HA! Good luck to Ireland, here's to dreaming we meet you in the final.
Anyone! As long as they make a lot of money to put to a good cause, like paying the Neville brothers to retire from the international scene.
If you want a real English singer, that will appeal to all, why not go for Robbie Williams?
But an Aussie band like Savage Garden, or a Kiwi band like Zed, would be great too, as we are part of the Commonwealth too, and have absolutely no chance of getting to the World Cup!
I never reply to this sort of thing; however, it seems like a rather silly question...Paul McCartney of course.
Something loud, forceful, and bass-driven by Primal Scream would be quite appropriate. If not, then Oasis. Just to restate a point most Americans think that the World Cup is something to do with NFL Europe.
Oasis wouldn't sing for England. They said it themselves! They will only sing for a proper football team like Ireland. And whoever says their has-beens has got it wrong. The word your looking for is LEGENDS.
The Beautiful South! Paul Heaton's a massive footy fan and has an amazing voice - he'd be perfect.
Five already have a remix for 2002 of Keep On Movin' and it sounds so fab. It should be that. I so love Three Lions but it's been long enough. 5ive are British and great!!!!!
Depeche Mode should
do it as they are one of the biggest bands in the world and produce some great songs time and time again. You don't last over 20 years if you're no good
If you want someone great and with a good sense of style I suggest Victoria Beckham, she's got it all!
This is so simple, they should have Robbie Williams do the singing.
Get them all to sing it! There are so many good suggestions and if you combined Bob the builder, Mariah, Robbie, the whole lot! It'd be great!
Although I come from Wales I support England as I support Liverpool and like to watch my boys in action (and all the other good players). So it seems to me that if you want to watch the best team and want to hear the best song...then choose OASIS and watch England win the World Cup!!!
No one has stated the most obvious person for the job. Not only is he an internationally renowned and celebrated superstar of music, one of the best contemporary composers in the world, and a singer blessed with a fabulous voice. But, he is also the best known football supporter in music. He has put his money where his mouth is to support football. It can only be SIR ELTON JOHN, Chairman and Life President of Watford FC, and a bloody good musician!
I think that Ricky Tomlinson should sing for England.
