Passenger numbers down at airport

Birmingham International Airport
More than 670,000 passengers used the airport in the month

Passenger numbers at Birmingham International Airport have gone down by more than 7%.

The 7.7% decrease in traffic in March compared to last year underlines "the challenging economic environment" it is facing, the airport said.

A total of 674,301 passengers used the airport in the month.

It said the conditions were affecting the whole of the aviation industry and Birmingham was "performing better than the majority of other UK airports".

The airport said there were 563,105 scheduled passengers and 111,196 charter passengers during March.

Chief executive officer, Paul Kehoe, stated he has "always said that this year will be a testing one".

He added: "In recent weeks we have been able to celebrate a number of positive announcements.

"(These include) the granting of planning permission for a runway extension by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Emirates' decision to increase capacity to Dubai, and the launch of Monarch's Larnaca and BMI Regional's Aberdeen services."
