Frank Warren's Sports Network Ltd has gone into administration
|
A company founded by boxing promoter Frank Warren has been refused permission to appeal against a court ruling to pay Joe Calzaghe some £1.8m. The undefeated world super-middleweight champion claimed Sports Network owed him the money in fees for his contest with Bernard Hopkins last year. Sports Network later went into administration. Lord Justice Ward and Lord Justice Wall said there was no prospect of the Court of Appeal overturning the ruling. Mr Warren had denied the allegation at the High Court and claimed instead that Mr Calzaghe, who retired from the ring in February, owed him £1m for breaking a contract which had been agreed verbally. 'No prospect at all' Mr Justice Wyn Williams dismissed Mr Warren's claim in March and ruled he should pay the boxer. Lord Justice Ward and Lord Justice Wall agreed the application to appeal by the Sports Network's administrators was "hopeless and must be refused". The judges said there was "no prospect at all" of the Court of Appeal overturning findings of fact by Mr Justice Wyn Williams. Lord Justice Ward said: "The judge cannot be criticised for taking a view of the case and his assessment of the character, demeanour and personalities of the protagonists and Mr Warren in particular." Other sports promotion companies run by Mr Warren are continuing to trade.
