Homes are hit by flash flooding
Flooding in Merthyr Tydfil
Properties were hit in the Merthyr and Swansea areas
Heavy rain has caused flash flooding in south-west Wales affecting homes and businesses in the early hours of Wednesday.

The fire service said around 50 homes in Pontarddulais, Mumbles and Swansea city centre were affected.

Crews had to pump out some homes, but people were not evacuated and the heavy rain subsided by about 0600 BST.

Properties were also been hit in the Merthyr area while roads have been affected around Ebbw Vale.

South Wales Police said an overturned car combined with flooding had partially blocked the A4046 at College Road in Ebbw Vale.

Weather warning

David Phillips of Mid and West Wales Fire Service said he was called to Fabian Way in Swansea which was partially underwater.

"I was notified by control at 2.15am of flooding incidents in the Swansea area," he said.

"In Fabian Way in Swansea a cast iron man hole cover had come up. It had been washed down the road and left a big hole. I ended up standing guard over the hole for about one hour."

In Margam, near Port Talbot, a woman in her 20s was taken to Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, suffering from shock after lightning struck her home at about 0130 BST.

In north Wales, surface water is causing problems for drivers on roads in Wrexham the Mold areas, although the region's fire service said it had not received any flood-related calls.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for later on Wednesday morning across parts of mid and north Wales.
