Supporters of the campaign held a march and rally on Saturday in an attempt to stop some services being moved to Paisley.

The geriatric and maternity departments have been under review for some time.

The Vale of Leven General Hospital was built just after the World War II.

It has an accident and emergency unit, a general ward, and maternity, geriatric and psychiatric wards.

The geriatric and maternity units are now under review and could be moved to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

As yet there has been no formal public consultation by Argyll and Clyde Acute Trust but local residents are adamant they want to keep the services in Alexandria.

The geriatric unit has become run down and it is thought patients could be better treated in Paisley.

Expectant mothers come from as far away as Oban to give birth, but there are just not enough babies being born in the hospital to justify a maternity unit.

Louise Robertson, chairwoman of the Save the Vale campaign, said: "This area has a long history of people demonstrating for social justice."
