The prison service is looking to increase capacity

An outline planning application has gone to East Dunbartonshire Council.

The proposal includes the redevelopment of the existing prison site at Low Moss, plus adjoining vacant and derelict land.

In September 2002 an SPS estates review concluded that two new prisons would be required in Scotland to replace unfit and other temporary accommodation.

'Significant benefits'

The report also found there was a need to respond to a projected rise in prisoner numbers.

A spokesman for the SPS said: "We believe that this development offers significant long term benefits for the area and will provide hundreds of new jobs.

"It will replace the existing accommodation with a modern, fit for purpose and much needed new prison facility for the SPS."

Work generated by the project is expected to include construction jobs, as well as employment from the operation and maintenance of the prison.
