M1 work 'may be dug up'

The work will be near junction 28
Authorities will spend £1.7m improving a stretch of the M1, despite the fact their work may be dug up in a few years.

Large fences to block noise will be put up in South Normanton, Derbyshire, near junction 28 of the motorway.

But officials have conceded the boards may have to be taken down if the road is widened as planned.

Iftikhar Mir, from the Highways Agency, says even though the fences could be pulled down, local residents will have still benefited.

"This scheme was instigated back in 1999 and we are looking to have the scheme completed this year

"The worst case scenario if we were to pull them down... you've got to remember these people are going to get a great deal of benefit between now and then."
